Fifth grade courses are designed to firm up foundational skills for homeschooled students to begin the transition into more analytical thinking and to pave the way for success in middle school. Confidence in speaking, the ability to listen and offer intelligent observations, and the aptitude to discuss unfamiliar ideas intelligently are linked with the goal of higher-level thinking.

Vocabulary development and spelling are reinforced throughout the school year. Writing includes a study of sentences, paragraph writing, various forms of exposition and, by the end of the year, a formal research paper. Grammar is emphasized and integrated throughout the curriculum.

Dictionary and thesaurus work in book and computer forms, contextual study and word analysis skills are all included in this process.

Reading and Literature Fifth grade students will continue to develop and expand their reading skills through the study of literature, with an emphasis on literary elements, higher-level thinking skills, and vocabulary enrichment.

Social Studies All 5th grade home school history courses include a focused study of world history and continent geography. Fifth grade home school students should have prior knowledge of basic social studies skills and the ability to think critically about the world around them.

Students should also have a basic familiarity of the states and capitals of the United States, and knowledge of basic geographic areas of the world — the seven continents and four oceans. Your academic advisor will work with you to determine the best curriculum choice and approach for your child.

The major areas of study and work include an expanded knowledge of home, neighborhood, community, city, state, country, hemisphere and globe, and an expanded knowledge of basic geography, advanced skills at using maps, common landforms and significant geopolitical terms.

Also stressed is expanded knowledge of the earliest peoples of America, sections of the United States claimed by early European explorers during the colonial period, development of the new colonies under the administration of European figures, advancement of the British Colonists, the causes for and outcomes of the American Revolution, and exposure to the United States Constitution.

Math Problem Solving Our 5th grade mathematics curriculum continues on a daily basis to emphasize basic skills while developing reasoning, computational and problem-solving proficiency, data analysis and knowledge of mathematics vocabulary.

Mathematic proficiency is the goal. Key activities in the 5th grade mathematics curriculum include a varied use of manipulative aides for fractions, angles, decimals, geometry, measurement and graphing.

The Scientific Method is taught, where the students ask questions, plan and conduct simple investigations, and use simple instruments to gather data and draw conclusions. Earth Science is studied across the science curriculum at this level and includes a study of the solar system, geology, meteorology, and weather.

In life science, units include study of cells, plant and animal life cycles, reproduction and balance in nature. Life science also includes units on health and wellness. In physical science, motion and forces, electricity, energy, friction, heat and gravity, molecular and atomic theories, chemistry and the elements of the Periodic Table are studied.
